"Great road" (Stora landsvägen) - the last of August Strindberg's a play The literal title of this drama refers to Strindberg's own childhood street, which led directly to a cemetery. It is not by chance that his last drama is compared to a kind of testament or a theatrical self-portrait of the author. Strindberg depicts this drama as a trip to his memory, when at each "stop" the protagonist of the drama sees his own character and other allegorical figures in the story - the Passenger, the Child, the Temptress or the Murderer. "The Great Road" is an allegorical story, a summary of the thoughts of the playwright's entire life. Strindberg's contemporaries criticized him for combining everyday and poetic language, lack of drama. "The Great Road" clearly stood out from the entire work of the playwright, but this work is considered by many literary experts today as an evocative way of conveying the fragile emotional and psychological state of the character without dramatizing it.
Director Jonas Vaitkus says: "This pre-death play of the playwright is a travel drama with seven stations. This is a reflection of his entire work, from concise sharp prose to contrasting leaps into symbolism and metaphors with gender antagonism and sexual deviance. Non-rhythmic poetry that talks about the inner emotional state of a thinking person, without dramatizing and emphasizing mortal fate, without being afraid to sink into the stench of realism and naturalism, and to break out again with a satirical ironic approach to the unsolvable affairs of the Earth, the Earth and Man, without being afraid to admit one's own limitations. After all, you are condemned to death, because of which you experience daily grief and suffering in the presence of divine eternity. But you don't see it as a punishment or a total evil against which you have to rebel or throw yourself into disastrous atheistic or other extremes, although there were and are many who have killed themselves and killed millions. Just accept it as a tragedy of an irreplaceable, inevitable gift, as a mandatory payment for the grace given to exist, for the eternally priceless gift of being a consciously acting human being in this tragedy that protects, heals and enlightens the soul.
I am not surprised. , why this play is unknown in Lithuania, not translated in Russia. It is very rarely staged even in August Strindberg's homeland.
The Great Road unscrupulously exposes a person as such, a person from any land, any nationality, gender, color or anything else. A person who is vulnerable in the face of eternity.
August Strindberg comes to the troupe of the Lithuanian National Drama Theater at the right time and to the people of Lithuania who are preparing to create a welfare state."
Swedish writer and playwright August Strindberg ( 1849–1912) is one of the most important theater figures in the world. He is called the pioneer of modern theater. He is a playwright who surpassed his era, who expressed all currents and schools of literature at that time with his work. He is considered a naturalist, a neo-romantic, a pioneer of expressionism and surrealism in literature.
Strindberg not only wrote dramas, he also liked to experiment as a photographer and painter, his works are classified as abstract expressionism. Although Strindberg is now well-known not only in Sweden, but all over the world, his work did not immediately receive enough attention, he was even ignored by the Swedish public and accused of using sexual motifs in his works to attract readers.
