◊ 2022 Main prize at the international European festival of young directors "Fast Forward" in Dresden
Sirens sing beautifully, writes Homer. They are on the island of tuna, they lure men who swim by and kill them. Except for Orpheus, who sings louder, and Odysseus, whose companions put wax in his ears and tie him to a mast so he can listen to the sirens and not die.
European mythology is dominated by violence: between humans, gods, mythical creatures, and the sexes. Inequality and power imbalances breed fear and defense strategies, not relationships. What compels us to adhere to these structures?
In collaboration with her colleagues, director Laura Kutkaitė moves contemporary history directly into the middle of the myth minefield: four years after the peak of the #MeToo movement in Lithuania, she presents the problem of abuse of power in the art world on stage. Posing on a rock and waiting for the "great Odysseus", four actresses open their island theater and tell real stories from their creative processes and those of other Lithuanian women artists. They don't miss a single dark detail - not even their rivalries - and perform theater together: with costumes and make-up, with sound and lights, with bitter humor, passion, vulnerability and for many reasons. In this way, they tragicomically hit the structures exactly where they could change.
"I miss women's roles, I miss the fresh female power in the theater, and most of all I miss their voices, which is why the play is primarily about the voice of a woman, its creative and at the same time destructive force," says Laura Kutkaitė, the director of the performance "Silence of the Sirens".
The performance is part of the Young Creators Program implemented by LNDT. "Silence of the Sirens" opened the new Small Hall built during the reconstruction, which is intended to present the works of the participants of the Young Creators Program.
