Krystian's associate of the famous Polish theater director Łukasz Twarkowski, awarded in 2015. With the golden cross of the stage behind the video projections created for the play "Square of Heroes", he begins to direct the play himself, inspired by the short story "The Bear" by the French writer Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) about 19th-century Žemaitija "Bear".
Director Łukasz Twarkowski: "Dramaturgy of the play will rely on three sources. The first of them is the literary mystification "The Bear" by Prospero Mérimée. The other two are complex and controversial biographies of radical artists: Lithuanian photographer Vito Luckaus and French rock band Noir Désir vocalist Bertrand Cantat. Luckų and Cantat share not only a special tendency to combine death and affect, not only an interest in man's beastly beginnings or coercion, with Count Šemet, the character of "Bear". The story of each of them took place in Vilnius, the core of all these stories basically remains inaccessible to us, we can only speculate about each of them. These are borderline events that do not yield to any logic and rational cognitive tools."
Literaturist Kęstutis Nastopka about Prospero Mérimée's work "Bear": "Having conceived "Bear" as an antiphrase to the terrible stories that were read in the salon of Empress Eugenia, Napoleon III's wife, and chose Žemaitia as exotic, only known by hearsay A corner of Europe, the French romantic and mystifier Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) took a serious interest in the "local flavor" of this land - language, ethnography, past. The author of the short story wrote to one of his correspondents: "The trouble is that soon I found this story quite attractive and, instead of drawing a caricature, I wanted to draw a portrait of something impossible." The sources from which the author obtained knowledge about Žemaitija and Lithuania were not plentiful: the book "Subjugated Poland" by the Polish emigrant Edmonds Choieckis, who signed under the pseudonym Charles Edmond, the poem "Ponas Tadas" and the ballad "The Three Watchful Ones" by Adam Mickiewicz, stories he heard from Lithuanian people who emigrated to France after 1863. uprising, as well as letters from Russia, which discussed the political current affairs of Lithuania. From this fragmentary and often contradictory information, the creative imagination of the writer formed, in his words, a rather poetic mixture of "humanity and beastliness", which is interpreted by a foreign observer - Professor Wittenbach, in the culture of Žemaitsi. Trying to solve the count's riddle, he describes the young Shemet as a dual being, man and beast at the same time. contact: vipklientai@bilietai.lt
