A play from translated from Polish by Agnė ŠORIENĖ and Artur ZAPALOWSKI
In the new play by Polish director Anna Smolar, who presented the play at LNDT In "slow motion", the paper will explore the mechanism of manipulation, especially in the context of power-based work relations. The creators of the performance draw inspiration from the memoirs of Tippi Hedren, a famous Hollywood actress, the star of Alfred Hitchcock's films, published in 2016.
"I found a girl," A. Hitchcock said when he saw her, then an unknown model, in a TV commercial . He immediately invited her to work with him and made her famous by giving her the great roles of Melanie Daniels and Margaret Edgar in The Birds and Marnie. However, behind the facade reminiscent of the story of Cinderella, a much more complicated and painful reality is hidden: the legendary director did not want to share it with anyone and persuaded the novice actress, who was inexperienced and could hardly believe in her success, to sign a 7-year contract, according to which Tippi committed to filming only with him. A. Hitchcock's relationship with T. Hedren was sick and multifaceted: he became her teacher and mentor, but at the same time he controlled her every step, interfered in her personal life, isolated her from others. Finally, when Tippi broke the contract, the director made every effort to destroy her professional life.
Based on the studies of psychologists and stories describing similar experiences, it becomes clear that the tension, chronic stress, and trauma created by such relationships are close and recognizable to many. This forms a similar pattern to the effects of long-term stalking. Referring to some of the effects of Hitchcock's film, this performance is a subjective reconstruction of the making of The Birds. Adopting the image of menacing and wild creatures, the aim is to highlight the dynamics of such relationships, enabled by the deep-rooted schemas of our societies, and to show a heroine who pushes herself towards discord and resistance.
