"When I was invited to create this issue, I said, well, I will create it, but know that it will be dark here. They say it's very good, people like the dark. I say, huh? He says, his. I say, well, let's go."
On the stage of the theater for the first time stand-up comedy - a genre that cleanses not only the narrator, but also the listener through laughter. Making another person laugh is really not an easy task. And an even more difficult task, which concerns the theater using humor as a form of communication, is to touch on the painful themes of mourning, loss, and suicide that are close to all of us. To stir up something unexpected in a person, to help them laugh at themselves, to look at painful experiences from the side in order to be able to come to terms with them.
The author of a play created together for the first time Birutė Kapustinskaitė and director Eglė Švedkauskaitė invite the audience to travel together to new theatrical forms. and explore family loss in one stand-up comedy act.
Characters of the play: Mom is a famous TV host and Sūnus - a successful stand-up performer - both are not looking for a word in their pocket, but when faced with the loss of their Father, it becomes difficult for them to talk. It's a story about letting go of anger, shame, guilt, and finding ways to open up to vulnerability and to each other.
Stand-up for Meaning and Meaninglessness is a comedic play about the main characters' attempts to communicate after the loss of their father. Black humor, self-irony and narrative humor (stand-up) are combined here with drama, weaving together a story about loss, about the relationship between mother and son with society's attitude to mourning and the resulting need to adapt," says the play's author, Birutė Kapustinskaitė.
"I think that the theater, as a means of communication with a public and wide audience, should not only talk about heroic death and sacrifice, but also about elementary, unmystified mental health, must follow what is happening in society here and now, must develop empathy for people dealing with depression and other mental illnesses. This play is a way to talk about hope and the will to live, even when you don't seem to know how to do it," director Eglė Švedkauskaitė.
