This production of H. Ibsen's drama created by director Oskars Koršunov is a continuation of the consistent strategy of the Youth Theater repertoire. The theater, considering the modern man and the psychological and philosophical topics relevant to him, turns to important and complex texts of world literature and dramaturgy.
H. Ibsen's play "The Wild Duck" tells the story of the Ekdal family, whose seemingly happy everyday life is disturbed by a guest from the past. Gregers Verlė, who strives to tell only the truth in any case, reveals to the hosts certain secrets about each of their pasts and destroys the illusion of their happy family and home. Gregers is firmly convinced that he is carrying the truth, and it turns into a family tragedy. And the wild duck kept in the Ekdals' attic becomes the symbol of this family, which is supposedly trapped in an illusion and a lie.
This stage version of "The Wild Duck" is not only a return of the Youth Theater to the themes and philosophy of H. Ibsen's dramas, which have been repeatedly interpreted on its stage, but also a symbolic attempt by O. Koršunov to "crochet" once again into well-known dramaturgical material, and the director's return to the theater where the director's debut work on the professional stage also found a home more than 35 years ago - the performance "Ten buti chia (Pauses)".
The director of the play O. Koršunovas: The more the world turns upside down, the more the divide between truth and justice becomes apparent. The more "righteous" there are, the less justice remains. When truth is replaced by post-truth or propaganda, and justice is determined by ideologies, when truth is entangled in social networks, and justice is carried out by like-minded people and algorithms, it is high time for the theater to turn to morality. And to talk about her as only the theater can: maximally perfectionist, with all emotional purity and intellectual transparency. I can't see a better play for this than Ibsen's The Wild Duck. It is only necessary to place it in modern times, so that the moral tension of the play rings with the words and signs of the present.
Premiere: 2025 October 1.
