One of the most famous Žemaitsians, the first Lithuanian historian, writer and educator Simonas Daukantas (1793–1864) wrote not only his best-known work "The way of ancient Lithuanians, mountaineers and Žemaitsians", but also a short story "The Life of Rubinaitis Peliūze", which is not an original work, but a very free translation of the book "Robinzonas Jaunesnysis" by the German author Joachim Heinrich Campe, adapted for the Lithuanian environment.
S. Daukantas renamed Robinson Crusoe to Rubinaitis Peliūze, London to Karaliaučius, and Thames to Nemunas. Disobeying his parents, Peliuz sets out into the world in search of adventure and finds it to his heart's content, when the ship sinks, all his passengers perish, and he himself is washed to the island by the waves. The creators of the show relied on both works of S. Daukantas, so the audience will have the opportunity not only to find out what fate awaits Peliūze and his new friend Nedėldienios (i.e. Friday) who were stranded on an uninhabited island, but also to discuss the way of survival of the ancient Lithuanians. Four object theater actors will not only introduce the audience to the ancient Lithuanian world view, language, household, difficult survival at the mercy of the elements, will allow them to touch mythological themes, but will also involve them in the drama of the relationship between parents and children of one family. After all, we take care of values such as respect, trust and love only when we feel how easy it is to lose them. While reading "The Life of Rubinaitis Peliūze", I felt great pleasure, because it has been a long time since I read a work that so delicately tells about how parents should be with their children, how to share their experiences with them, how to raise children. Although we don't really like the word "educate" today either. But I really don't know if there can be happy children in life who were not raised by their parents, who did not draw certain limits of freedom, who did not have any responsibilities in their childhood. In any case, the child will find one or another moral compass on his own, which will form certain limits of his thinking and perception of the world. If not at home, then online, in the yard or somewhere else. Finally, in order to break boundaries, we must first get to know them, says the director of the play S. Degutytė.
Premiere: 2023 May 5.
