The Nobel Prize laureate Olga Tokarczuk's novel "The Fugitives" is a multi-layered work, a journey through time, the world and layers of consciousness. This journey is through the outer and inner worlds, which inevitably manifest themselves to a person in their fragmentary nature. O. Tokarczuk immerses the reader in the mystery, the very fog of the world in which a person wanders. This is how the multi-layered work manifests itself as a mysterious, personality-changing force.
The existential text inspired actress Aldona Vilutytė and director Jonas Kuprevičius – creators of different theater generations – to create a chamber performance in which the themes of the novel would be explored through the intimate presence of one woman with herself. Being, trying to grasp thinking, which, although finite, is inevitably changing until the very end, is never silent and moves from one point to another. Being, trying to be an invisible observer of the world and people, learning to accept my anxiety and running. It is a journey of imagination through the structures of life and being, observing them through the small lens of consciousness.
As O. Tokarczuk writes, it is possible to see the world only fragmentarily, there will be no other way. There are moments, fragments, temporary configurations, which, as soon as they are formed, immediately disintegrate again. Life? There is no such thing to see; I see lines, planes, bodies and how they change over time. And time seems like an elementary device for measuring small changes, a school ruler with a simplified scale - it has only three divisions: was, is and will be.
