The debut novel "The End of Eddie Belgel" by the writer Édouard Louis (born in 1992), known as the prodigy of modern French literature, depicts the life of a teenager in a low-class working-class family in a docu-fiction style. in the province of France. Eddie is constantly bullied at school, often bullied for his psychophysics (which is why he is nicknamed "pyderu"). Eddie's father uses violence against his son because he himself experienced it as a child from his own parents. Trying to escape from the clutches of his family and school, Eddie strives to become "strong" and "normal", but his efforts are in vain when he begins to realize his true nature and decides to run away...
This work É. Louis brought great success: at the age of just 22, the literary debutant earned his first nomination for the prestigious Goncourt Prize, the book was published in a circulation of more than 300,000 copies and translated into 25 foreign languages (in Lithuanian, the book was published in 2023 by the publishing house "Kitos kőgis").
In his new work, director N. Jasinskas aims to convey personally sensitive topics. Born almost at the same time as the author of the novel, who comes from a province in northern Lithuania, N. Jasinskas says: The images created in the novel and the emotions experienced are easy to perceive as your personal life experiences. Although É. Louis and I, as the director of the performance, are separated by a considerable geographical distance, but one can understand that the life and mentality of the European province are identical, regardless of geographical latitude and nationality: poverty, deprivation, psychological violence experienced daily, unresolved problems of alcohol addiction in the family - inseparable from the great part of our country's everyday life. [...] The title "The End of Eddie" is two-fold: it presupposes the end of a young person's growth in an inappropriate cultural, social, political space, and it means a new beginning - the author seeks to separate himself from the "former self" as consciously as possible. This desire can be perceived as an extremely strong desire to get rid of the past, consciously moving towards a kind of "awakening".
Premiere: 2022 October 21.
