It is said that if there are good things that resulted from the First and Second World Wars , are many talented writers of the "lost generation", whose painful experiences found themselves at the center of the most valued literature of the 20th century. It is unlikely that we will find another such novel that talks about war in such a satirical manner as it is done in the adventures of the Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek "The Brave Soldier Šveik".
Adomas Juška, a student of the director Eimuntas Nekrošias, while still a student of the 3rd course of directing at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater, made his debut with the performance "Šveikas" based on the novel by Jaroslav Hašek. In his first work, the young director chose several situations created by the author of the cult novel and through them aimed to look at Šveikas as a person whose smile was not an easy laugh, but a sharp opposition to the government, war and the environment. In the play, Šveik's setting is a soldier's shooting range, where he holds a target while his superiors practice shooting. Šveik smiles, the chaplain drinks, the soldier screams and shoots... The director's goal is to reveal something true about the idiotic existence of each of them.
The story itself, how Hašek came up with this character, is interesting. : after returning home, probably drunk (the author was famous for this), he wrote down on paper a statement about the character he had invented. When he got up in the morning, he found his own note on a piece of paper: "The biggest idiot is the man who wants to go to war himself." Of course, you have to keep in mind the historical context. Hašek is a Czech author. At that time, the Czech Republic was completely helpless in the Austro-Hungarian war, it did not need this war at all. So a Czech who would voluntarily go to war, serve the emperor and die for him must be the biggest idiot. So Šveik's idiocy is also a very important topic. Through it, the humanity of this character is revealed. A person who is able to smile and joke during the war, says the director of the performance A. Juška.
Premiere: 2018 April 24.
