Peteris Handke - Austrian writer, 2019 awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for "an impactful work that explores the periphery and singularity of human experience with linguistic ingenuity." The main themes of the author's work are the reality surrounding man, the search for the boundaries of language and subjective truth. "Prophecy" was created in the early period of the writer's creativity, when the author was only twenty-two years old. This work, like the other 1964-1966 written plays, the author classified them as so-called language plays. The play does not have action, plot lines, scenography: all attention is focused on the word.
In the beginning there was a word - phonetics and rhythm were the first elements that caught the attention of the youngest generation director Justinos Vinciūnas. He was looking for ways to convey this text as music, to compose its rhythmic score. Finally, the question arose: where is the person?
The oldest generation of theater actors are looking for the answer to this question together with the director on stage: Algirdas Latėnas, Vidas Petkevičius, Saulius Sipaitis, Gediminas Storpiristis - the real greats of the theater stage, from an active life It seems like the generation is leaving. According to the director, the experience of these actors becomes a counterpoint to the formalistic style of the play. On their lips, the prophecy sounds both like a biblical metaphor and like an absurd, self-ironic ode to everyday life. The four readers A, B, C and D mentioned in the play take the form of homeless people in the play. All of them have renounced tangible forms of property - observers who have risen above everyday life.
In the performance, Handke's text is interwoven with authentic observations of the actors, life situations, and this speaks of the search for a person's place and identity in the face of absurd reality. Handke's work offers the possibility of a reality beyond words. The very act of reading also saves us from the game of forms: the reader encounters a mysterious form whose meaning he does not know, but only by articulating it can he try to discover the content. In this way, by resisting the inner knowledge or its impression, we enter the invisible reality of the text. It is a reality that arose before concepts. Therefore, "Prophecy" can resonate with those who are accompanied by a feeling of uncertainty of reality. Although this play is small, it is still a consolation, telling about the truth hiding somewhere beyond, says director Justinas Vinciūnas.
Premiere: 2024. October 29
