The Austrian playwright Ödön von Horváth wrote "Tales of the Vienna Woods" in 1931 and depicted the beginnings of fascism in German and Austrian consciousness. They prepared Hitler's rise to power in 1933 and determined that fascist Germany occupied Austria without any resistance in 1939. This play, interpreted many times in European theaters, is almost unknown in Lithuania.
The director of the play, Yana Ross, together with the playwright Mindaugas Nastaravičius, read "Vienas miško pasakas" in her own way: We are creating an adaptation, but the essential themes of the play are nationalism, cultural traditions, hypocrisy - remains the axis of the performance. The genre of the play is tragicomedy. The performance will provoke laughter, but at some point laughter can make you feel very uncomfortable...
M. Nastaravičius describes the direction of the performance as follows: We change the plot, the characters a little, we move from 1931 to 2019, from Vienna to Vilnius, from Austrian nationalism to Lithuanian nationalism, from Austrian-German relations to Lithuanian-Russian relations, but the essence of the work still remains related to those problems and themes that Horváth names in his dramaturgy.
"One forest tale" is a biting portrait of the petty-bourgeois mentality in a small town environment: here everything is cozy and comfortable, forgetful and illusory. The play talks about the need to resist narrow, stagnant thinking. Resistance is born of otherness. A young woman searching for her life path, faced with the environment around her, tries to break free from it. We follow her fate throughout the play, until the tragic ending. [...] Some of the motifs of Horváth's play remind me of a classic of Lithuanian literature - Žemaitė's work "Marti", - director Yana Ross summarizes the themes raised in the play.
Premiere: 2019 February 15.
