"Suicide" of the Vilnius Small Theater is a macabre and today extremely relevant Russian 20th century play. the comedy of the first half of avant-garde artist Nikolai Erdman. In it, the playwright highlighted the absurdity of Soviet everyday life, about which one of the characters in "Suicide" says: "Currently, citizen Podsekalnikov, what you can think about while alive, you can only say when you are dead."
The text of the play sparkles with winged aphorisms about grimace of Soviet reality. Here is one of the characters of the comedy - the courier Yegorushka, who embodies the ruling class, proclaims: "The word is not a sparrow, you release it - you won't catch it, that's it, you let it go - you won't catch it, but instead it will catch you and won't let you go.", "Inspiration only after receiving instructions!". "Suicide" was never allowed to be staged when the author was alive, although the play was admired by the great Russian directors Konstantin Stanislavsky and Vsevolod Meyerhold. However, the worst that could have happened did not happen at that time. Perhaps the playwright's life was saved by Stalin's half-disdainful response recorded in a letter to Stanislavski: "Empty and even harmful comedy."
"Suicide" directed by Gabriela Tuminaitė speaks not about the Soviet reality, but about today's reality, about modern society attacked by populism and propaganda. The comedy tells how Semion Podsekalnikov (actor Daumantas Ciunis), an unemployed lazy man who lives in a communal apartment with his wife and mother-in-law, who does not understand who he is and what he is doing in this life, after arguing with his wife over liver sausage, decides to commit suicide. His wife, mother-in-law and neighbor try to dissuade him, but his suicide turns out to be beneficial to many. One persuades him to kill for society, another - for her, a third - for art, a fourth - for religion. A cunning neighbor is already collecting money for the funeral, but Podsekalnikov suddenly realizes that he does not want to die at all. He ponders life and death. The play is full of satire, farce and at times existentialist thinking about the meaning of life.
Is such a theme of the play suitable for a society struggling with suicide? Without a doubt! – the confident creative team of the performance. "The main theme is not suicide, it is not about the death or fall of man. We're trying to create those people's worlds. What are they? Grotesque, colorful and interesting," says Agnė Šataitė, who plays in the play. Paradoxically, the laughter of satire or black comedy can become an effective antidote to depressive thoughts and spiritual weakness. received recognition at the Dalia Tamulevičiūtė Festival of Professional Theaters: Agnė Šataitė was awarded a special prize of D. Tamulevičiūtė's relatives for the role of Serafima Iljinična, and Daumantas Ciunis was recognized as the best actor of the festival for the role of Semion Semionovičius Podsekalnikov.
"It can be seen that the director and the actors understand each other well. , creates the fabric of the performance from acting material formed by the same tradition, with a similar feeling: they are playful, witty, feel the genre intonation of the performance, hear and see each other. The audience, in turn, sees Daumantas Ciunis (Podsekalnikova), who has become stronger (from the performance of Myškin's laureate Eimuntas Nekrošias), a witty, plastic and persistent Indre Patkauskaitė (Podsekalnikov's wife Marija), a witty, plastic and persistent, with a barely perceptible undertone of melancholy, a temperamental primatial ambitious Agnė Šataištė (Podsekalnikov's mother-in-law), a cunning and the elusive Tomas Rinkūnas Kalabuskina, the sweet-voiced pathetic intellectual Grand-Skubika of Tomas Stirnas" 7 days of art.
