A variation on the themes of Fyodor Dostoevsky's novels "Idiot" and "Demons"
Drama in two parts
The novel "Idiot" by Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881), a classic of Russian and world literature, is one of the key and most popular works of this writer, a global cultural value. He wrote this novel while living in Geneva, Milan and Florence, and finished it in 1869. Many plays and films have been made based on this novel, and its main characters - the naive prince Myshkin, the fatalistic Nastasya Filipovna and the fierce Parfion Rogozhin - were played by the world's most famous actors. A play based on this novel was also staged in Vilnius Old Theater in 1963.
This time a play based on F. Dostoevsky's novels "Idiots" and "Demons" was staged by our representative of modern directing, Agnius Jankevičius. Having clearly manifested himself in the theatrical avant-garde, he does not shy away from classical productions in his work, and successfully cooperates with our theater. The director A. Jankevičius speaks about the performance as follows: "The famous rock musician and poet Jim Morrison, once asked what he thinks the audience really needs, answered: "I think people need something spiritual." Hearing this, his friend sprayed him with a mouthful of unswallowed whiskey because he couldn't control his laughter. Morrison himself laughed. At the same evening's concert, the rock star caused a public scandal, thus expressing a protest against the use of his fictitiously created image.
Transferring the parallel to the fable of F. Dostoyevsky's novel, Prince Myshkin is a silent protest that causes a great tsunami of passion to possess in the afflicted people, although in reality they only need something small and spiritual. Capitalist relations affect moral relations, and moral relations cannot affect capitalist ones. This is the ideological key of F. Dostoevsky's novel The Idiot, which will unlock the stage version of this work on the stage of the Lithuanian Russian Drama Theater." In this version of our theater, the staging of the novel "The Idiot" will also use the motifs of another famous novel "Demons" by F. Dostoyevsky.
The performance premiered in 2018. December 15
