"Jerma" is a play about relationships that grow cold, about a demanding body, love that is no longer safe, motherhood without sparkles, the courage to admit what is often kept silent.

Director Artūras Areimas the performance based on Federico García Lorca's play "Jerma" (Spanish: "Yerma") explores the theme of reproduction. The axis of the play is the tension between society's expectations, the pressure to have children and the freedom of the individual to create his own life. The play highlights the different faces of motherhood, the contradictions - the helplessness of not being able to have children and the fatigue, the threat of losing yourself after having them.

The play "Jerma" written by the Spanish poet and playwright F.G. Lorca in 1934 was adapted by the director A. Areima - the vocabulary, moral dilemmas and themes were transferred to a modern context.

The play tells the story of a young woman who is tormented by the social stigma of a childless marriage. Jerma is obsessed with the idea of ​​having a child in order to live up to what she believes to be a proper societal standard. It is about the body that begins to dictate more than the mind, about love that does not fit within the framework of a couple, about motherhood as lust, as God, as an illness, as a protest. "Jerma" speaks of the desire to feel meaning when all other mechanisms that give meaning to life no longer work.

The creative team raises questions that are extremely relevant today. How does human reproduction relate to identity, role in society and fullness of life? What do infertile couples experience after miscarriage? Where does the social pressure to have a child come from?

Not having children can be a rational human choice, but the pressure to become parents is so strong that some couples do not even consider the possibility of not having children. About 15% of people in Lithuania are currently experiencing infertility. couples, 4 out of 5 divorce after losing a child, every fifth woman has a miscarriage, about 19 percent. women develop postpartum depression. The statistics are telling, and feelings about human reproduction unfortunately often remain behind closed doors.

Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) is a Spanish poet, playwright and prose writer. Although it is called one of the greatest of the 20th century. an innovator of poetic and dramatic form, he himself never consciously sought it. The poet always tried to be on the side of the downtrodden and marginalized. Died during the Spanish Civil War under mysterious circumstances. He called himself a supporter of social theater, and in the space of dramas, not only the problem of the inexorable fate typical of Greek tragedy is evident, but also the questionable perspective of the development of European civilization. Dramas feature constant anxiety, spiritual tension, anticipation of impending danger, fear of violent death and its fatal inevitability. "Jerma" is one of the parts of the trilogy ("Blood Wedding", "Jerma", "The House of Bernarda Alba"). in 1992 was staged at the National Kaunas Drama and Juozas Miltinis Drama Theaters.

Artūras Areima is one of the most interesting creators of Lithuanian theater of the middle generation. Since 2017 Candidate for the "New Theater Realities" prize of the European Theater Union. He has repeatedly received the highest ratings from professional stage art assessors: in 2013. for his search for new forms of stage expression, he was awarded the Boris Dauguvietis earring, nominated several times (2013, 2014, 2015) for the Golden Stage Cross in the director category. in 2014 founded a theater of his own name, under whose banner the productions toured some of the most famous theater festivals in Europe and Asia.
