Jean-Luc Lagarce's play "I was at home waiting for the rain to come" (J'étais dans ma maison et j'attendais que la pluie vienne) - the penultimate work of the French actor, director and playwright. The play, written in 1994, a year before the author's death (he died of AIDS at the age of 38), is one of the three (next to "It's the end of the world", 1990, "Far Country", 1995) testamentary works of the playwright.
,I was at home waiting for the rain to come' tells about five women (sisters, mother, grandmother), who have been waiting for a brother, son, grandson for many years. Women's lives all this time seem to have stopped, stuck... Now he's back and he's lying in his bed, which they kept for him. sleeping? Dying? We never see him: is he really there, or is it just a projection of women's hopes, fears, sorrows, expectations?
"I found it beautiful that the play as if incomplete that it has more pauses than action. It opens the space for interpretations, it arouses the desire to think about the nature of love, self-sacrifice, and truth. The choice of this work is completely intuitive, but relevant both for me and for the 21st century. to a person Tragism, depth and gentle humor intertwined in the text have an emotional effect and open up a broad and complex theme of waiting." (Kotryna Siaurusaitytė)
I was at home and I was waiting for the rain will come
I looked at the sky as always,
At the road running far away.
I always look in the evenings, I always stand in the evenings until
night falls on the threshold and I wait, wait...
I waited for the rain to come and moisten the ground, paths, grass
and calm us down.
(Jean-Luc Lagarce. "I was at home waiting for the rain to come". Translated from French by Gintaras Patackas)
