Singing Beach SUN AND SEA

Sun and Sea" - a singing beach that has traveled to 28 countries and 36 cities in the world. The work of artists Rugilė Barzdziukaitė, Vaiva Grainytė and Lina Lapelytė takes us to an endless summer day, which the audience observes from above - from the perspective of the sun. Dressed in bathing suits, the performers sunbathe, apply sunscreen, build sand castles, read books, play games and have snacks, and sing as they go about their usual beach routines.

In artificial summer daylight, the thoughts of different characters are voiced: life concerns and memories, the composition of cream for sensitive skin is discussed, the breakfast menu. But this image of a lazy vacation is just a carefree surface: bodies exposed to time and heat hide a premonition of the end - the transience of Earth and people. The deceptively soft and positive music of the piece hides electrified anxiety and general weariness, while the faded colors of beach fabrics hide the merciless force of the natural elements. With gentle irony and deep concern, "The Sun and the Sea" tells about the feverish body of man and the planet, for which the sea is no longer enough to cool.

2019 The work, awarded the prestigious "Golden Lion" at the Venice Art Biennale, maneuvers between various genres, combining the impression of a living painting and an installation placed in a special architecture, combining the creative principles of contemporary opera and performance, experimental theater and sound sculpture. The singing beach in Vilnius, which has made the country famous in the world, is shown in the impressive space of the former taxi park, where the audience can watch the opera-performance from several floors of the serpentine.

The work is performed in Lithuanian with the possibility to follow the libretto in English.
