Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Snow Queen" is one of the most famous works of the Danish storyteller, which has become a world classic of children's literature. The tale of the girl Gerda's journey in search of her brother Kajaus has been staged many times in various theaters and screened in the cinema. Although in Vilnius theater "Lėlė" H. Ch. Andersen's fairy tale "The Snow Queen" was staged in 1993. (dir. and art. Vitalijus Mazūrs), the original ideas of the show's creators encourage us to return to the work once again.
According to the director of the play, Nijolė Indriūnaitė, Andersen's fairy tale contains relevant questions for any generation of young viewers. : what forms the basis of mutual relations; how to evaluate the intersection of Life and Death; where lies the hope needed to create a new quality of communication? The questions mentioned in the story of the main characters of the fairy tale - sister Gerda and brother Kajaus - arise when children lose the ability to sincerely listen to each other, lose attention to the doubts and pain of their loved ones. Gerda's journey to Lapland - the land of the Snow Queen, in order to find her brother there and bring him home - is, according to Nijolė Indriūnaitė, a journey of "cultivating faith and love in the inner world of a child".
"In the word" "faith" we see a coded reference to a specific action, with the help of which it is possible to restore spiritual peace: "only - walking" is an action that pushes Gerda forward, preventing her from losing hope" - thinks N. Indriūnaitė, emphasizing that in the play a lot of creative space is provided by shadows, visual for the forms of theatrical expression that allow for the development of an associative, ambiguous field of meanings of the performance.
In the performance, the actors act on the principle of shadow theater, screens of various sizes operate, projections, puppets of different shapes and technologies are exhibited (paper cut-outs, carved textured shadows), masks and paper plastic objects. The scene is formed using the principles characteristic of cinematography - montage of different plans and images, expressive dynamics of object movements. "We want the little viewers to immerse themselves in a unique visual world, full of images of dreams and visions, unfolding like a memory" - says Aušra Bagočiūnaitė Paukšienė, a participant in the performance.
