The Open Books Festival will invite you to intriguing literary journeys in the city and nature
October 23-26, the Seventh Literary Festival Open Books will offer a very diverse program: meetings with Lithuanian and foreign writers, discussions, musical performances, literary awards, poetry readings, international conference, Vilnius and nature tour.
"The slogan of this festival“ Literature, City, Nature ”. We want to discuss why the city man has the need to look back at nature and how it is reflected in the literature. This topic will be important in conversations with writers, other cultural representatives, as well as when selecting places of the event. This year the festival will last as long as four days - from Thursday to Sunday.
Stars from abroad
Famous writers from abroad will visit the festival this year. Perhaps the most prominent star of the event is Nino Harastychwili, a German writer from Sacramento, coming to the festival in cooperation with the Goethe's Institute. Her two books appeared in Lithuanian ("Eighth Life (Brillian)" and "Light Light" (both of them translated from German, Vilija Gerulaitienė, published by Alma littera publishing house) and received great interest from readers. has been on the long list of the International Booker Prize. Dovilė Kuzminskaitė will moderate this conversation.
For those interested in the history of cities, those who want to understand how the big cities we live in now will also have something to offer - Open Books British historian Ben Wilson, known to Lithuanian readers, come from the Metropolis book (translated from English by Tadas Jur. In this book, the writer leads us through ancient cities, describing how their planning and life of another, and discussing the development of cities as the history of our civilization. These days, as the increasing number of questions about which cities we will live in the future, this conversation can offer new prospects. This interview at the festival will be moderated by Mindaugas Kvietkauskas.
Discussions and meetings with Lithuanian writers
Like every year, the festival will offer meetings with Lithuanian writers who have published books in recent years - Open Books become the opportunity to discuss what happened during this time in literary life.
On the opening day of the festival, the presentation of Jūratė Čerškutė's monograph "Language Physicist" to the work of Richard Gavel will take place, during which a broader discussion on cities in literature will take place.
On Saturday, authors such as Algirdas Kaušpėdas, Mindaugas Nastaravičius, Giedrė Kazlauskaitė, Marius Burokas, Bernardas Gailius, Ieva Sokolovaitė, Šarūnas Černiauskas, Ingrida Jakubavičienė, Viktorija Vitkauskaitė, Marius Ivaškevičius, Dovydas Pancerovas and others will present their new books. Friday night will be dedicated to poetry readings - their poems in an informal environment will read in one of the bars of Vilnius. As always, the festival will also offer discussions with literature on topics. One of them is how the literature reflects the life of the city, why writers turn back to nature. Virginija Kulvinskaitė, Ieva Dumbrytė, Jurga Tumasonytė and others will participate in this discussion. Another discussion will talk about the involvement of artists in protests, discussions on the Kismo of City Public Spaces. The discussion will be asked: what the voice of artists can change, how actively they are involved in social processes, whether in Lithuania, the cultural people and authorities are not lost on important issues. Lina Michelkevičė, journalist Marius Eidukonis and others will participate in this interview.
The festival will also continue the literary breakfast tradition. This time on Saturday morning, the earliest visitors will be invited to the late breakfast of rulers together with historian Neringa Dambrauskaitė-Martinkėne and breakfast snacks inspired by the author's book "The rulers eats", presenting the King of Poland and the cuisine of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in the 16th and 17th centuries. There will be innovations this year. An intriguing musical performance will take place on Thursday, on the opening day of the festival, with two writers, father and son: Gintaras and Dovydas Grajauskai, who will organize a show on the Line. David and Gintaras will be assisted by an old buddy, a former "smuggling" and "Rockefeller" drummer Kęstutis Bublys. The show will improvise and read poems from both authors this year, and this will give birth to special speaking, when reading, supplementing them, provoking and contrary to the sequences of poems will join one huge poem. On Friday night, literary lovers will be invited to walk around Vilnius on Bohemian Roads: the excursions will be visited by the former writers' favorite cafes, bars and the stories related to them.
