Guided RIMUTĖ excursion:
The icon of Our Lady of Surdegis is the main one here, but not the only one, providing graces to those who ask for them. We will learn how to read icons, the abundance of which often surprises casual churchgoers. Church Slavonic is not only not used anywhere except in the church, but it has never been spoken. We will hear how it sounds and what makes it special.
Traditionally, the abundance of religious communities is betrayed by the number of houses of worship. But this did not apply to Kaunas. Catholic churches became the first churches in Kaunas occupied by the empire. When Kaunas became the center of the Governorship, it was not solid to have churches in Catholic churches alone. When the city became a fortress, life changed fundamentally. However, the large number of churches in no way indicated that there were many permanent Orthodox residents here, that their community was strong or influential.
