Music from New Spain (present Mexico and surrounding countries). Their repertoire combines the academic counterpoint tradition and folk tunes that existed together and were used for the purposes of evangelization. Based on original manuscripts and Spanish Baroque guitar sources, the performers explore music in which European, local American nations and African cultures are intertwined. This music is lively, improvised, full of rhythmic variations and deep historical layers. The ensemble avoids both academic sterility and the simplification of popular music - their performances balance between authentic performance and creative freedom, often involving percussion, string, brass and vocal polyphony.
