KNIGHTS SONGS
EUGENIJUS CHREBTOVAS (baritone)
RAMINTA LAMPSATYTĖ (piano)
In the program:
Maurice Ravel, Jacques Ibert, Mitch Leigh
Eternal as the world, the legend of noble knights will be revived in a new play by one of the most famous Lithuanian baritones, Eugenijus Chrebtov and ambassador of Lithuanian culture in Germany, pianist, vocal tutor and musicologist Raminta Lampsatytė in the program "Songs of the Knights". Perhaps it would be difficult to find a person who has not heard anything about the strange knight Don Quixote, who performed incredible feats, experienced the strangest adventures, was constantly full of noble thoughts and unattainable desires. His actions, prompted by the many read novels about knights errant, may seem strange to many. But, on the other hand, how much life wisdom, knightly philosophy, dreamy idealization of objects are hidden in his hikes and the reflections that accompany them. For such musical reflections, the performers of this concert chose two legendary vocal cycles and excerpts from Mitch Leigh's musical "Man of La Mancha".
The first cycle - by Jacques Ibert "Don Quixote Songs" composed for the legendary motion picture directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst and starring Fyodor Chaliapin as Don Quixote. He was the first and recorded four songs in 1936. J. Ibert's songs in the released film. The second masterpiece of vocal art is "Don Quixote for Dulcinea" by Maurice Ravel. The first author to be commissioned to create music for a G.W. Pabst film was M. Ravel. Unfortunately, when he began to compose music, the disease worsened and the composer was forced to stop work. The director, not receiving the musical material in time, terminated the contract with the composer and transferred the order to J. Ibert. This angered Mr. Ravel, but he did not abandon the idea and, recovering from his illness, wrote three songs with lyrics by Paul Morand, the author of the film's script. Unfortunately, the composer finished creating songs only with the help of friends and assistants, because he could not even sign himself.
Songs from the American composer M. Leigh's musical "Man from La Mancha" sound like hymns to love and chivalry. The story of this musical unfolds in the prison where Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra himself is sitting and, in order to prove his authorship, together with other prisoners, he puts on a play about Don Quixote.
