FELIX MENDELSSOHN BARTHOLDY - Symphony no. 2 in B flat major, Op. 52, "Song of Praise" (Lobgesang)
The Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Kaunas State Choir, selected soloists and conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius invite the audience to listen to an extraordinary piece - Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's symphonic cantata "Slovinimos giesmė" (published after the composer's death as his Symphony No. 2 in B flat major), first performed in 1840. At the Leipzig festival dedicated to the 400th anniversary of Johann Gutenberg's invention of the printing press. Robert Schumann, who attended the premiere, immediately noticed the work's connections with Ludwig van Beethoven's famous 9th symphony. Indeed, F. Mendelssohn's work can be described as triumphal music, perfectly expressing the 150th Psalm: "All that breathes praise the Lord." F. Mendelssohn used various texts from the Bible in the work, thus creating a single work that glorifies God. The main theme of the work is the transition from suffering and darkness to light and joy, symbolizing the education brought by the printed word. F. Mendelssohn used the words of Martin Luther as an epigraph to his magnificent work: "I would like to see all the arts, especially music, in the service of Him who gathered and created them all."
