With this concert, world-renowned pianist Alexander Paley and baritone GIEDRIUS PRUNSKUS, who nurtures the genre of art song, continue the idea of an extraordinary thought - a three-night marathon in which all the vocal cycles of the genius romantic Franz Schubert will be played.

Tonight, the audience will hear the second cycle "Winter Journey", created with the texts of the poet Wilhelm Müller. The romantic and nostalgic story will continue to lead the listeners through the world of feelings of the rejected young man, colored by the poetic sounds of music.

The second vocal cycle was created by F. Schubert in the penultimate years of his life, full of sad events. The composer lost all hope of publishing his works in Germany, and learned that his efforts to obtain permanent employment had been unsuccessful. The only consolation was Ludwig van Beethoven's feedback about his songs. The first biographer of L. van Beethoven, Anton Schindler, wrote about it: "The great master, who had not even known five Schubert miniatures until then, was impressed by their number and could not believe that Schubert had already composed more than five hundred songs by that time... He enthusiastically repeated more than once: "Truly, Schubert has the spark of God!"

"Winter Road" is one of the largest vocal cycles in the history of music. Its structure and emotional nature are quite different from The Beautiful Millwoman. There is no plot development here, the hero's journey has no beginning and no end. The gloomy mood is established in the first song and prevails until the end. Only occasionally are they enlightened by bright memories or false hopes. Gloomy nature surrounding the heroes: snow covering the entire earth, a frozen stream, a wandering snake luring to steep cliffs, a raven waiting for the traveler's death. In the sleeping village, the hero is greeted only by the barking of dogs, the arrow points to the road of no return: the road leads to the cemetery. Nevertheless, the cycle sounds transparent and sensitive, emotionally touching the heart of every listener, and the simplicity of melodies and forms gives the songs of the cycle a characteristic tone of folk music.
