FRANZ SCHUBERT - vocal cycle Schwanengesang (Swan Song), D. 957, texts by Ludwig Rellstab, Heinrich Heine, Johann Gabriel Seidl (14 songs)
With this concert, world-renowned pianist ALEXANDER PALEY and baritone GIEDRIUS PRUNSKUS, who fosters the genre of art song, will complete an extraordinary idea - a three-night marathon in which all the vocal cycles of the genius romantic Franz Schubert will be played.
Tonight, the audience will hear the third cycle "Swan Song". Indeed, it is not a cycle of songs conceived by the composer himself. This is a collection of songs made up of the last vocal miniatures published after F. Schubert's death.
After F. Schubert's death, the owner of the sheet music publishing house Tobias Haslinger bought a manuscript of songs written by Ludwig Rellstab from F. Schubert's brother, combined them with songs written with verses by Heinrich Heine, added the last song with verses by Johann Gabriel Seidl, and based on the legend that the swan wakes up before death, gave the set the name "Swan Song".
The 14 songs that make up the cycle have completely different styles. The songs, based on the poems of L. Rellstab and J. G. Seidl, are reminiscent of "The Beautiful Millwoman" in their means of expression - they are light, carefree, with a simple vocal melody and an expressive piano accompaniment. The songs inspired by H. Heine's poetry are significantly different from all other songs by F. Schubert - they not only open a new stage in his work, but also indicate new paths for the development of romantic songs. They can be called monologues: instead of a singing melody, there is a musical declamation that sensitively conveys all the nuances of the poem. The sonorous piano accompaniment is not figurative, the rhythmic, repeated chords are associated with the character of a mournful march or procession, and the chilling harmony creates a sense of tragedy. The leitmotif that unites the entire cycle becomes the theme of longing - this word appears periodically throughout the cycle, and undoubtedly the most famous piece in this collection is the famous "Serenade" by F. Schubert, easily recognized by every listener.
