The solemn ringing of the bells of the Pažaislis Monastery will announce the beginning of the 31st Pažaislis Music Festival. Guests from Switzerland will perform at the festive opening concert - the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro Modestos Pitrėnas, and the audience's favorite, world-renowned accordionist Martynas Levickis.
The St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest and most famous ensembles in Switzerland, with about seventy musicians from more than twenty countries. The orchestra resides in the historic, 1909 built in the St. Gallen concert hall, famous for its acoustics, and actively participates in the musical life of Switzerland. The collective is distinguished by a wide spectrum of repertoire - from opera and symphonic music to chamber programs and contemporary works. From 2018 the orchestra is led by the well-known Lithuanian conductor Modestas Pitrėnas, whose ensemble performs successfully on international stages and earns high ratings.
Martynas Levickis is very welcome to Lithuanian listeners - one of the most interesting modern accordion masters, famous for his inventive approach to music and impeccable technique. His performances fascinate with both virtuosity and emotional sincerity – every note takes on a new life in his hands. The opening concert will feature an impressive accordion concert by the Swedish composer Daniel Nelson "Treatise on the Ghost Machine", which will be performed by M. Levickis. At the beginning of the program, the listeners will hear Fabian Künzl's piece "This is how St. Gallen sounds", and the concert will be crowned by one of the most famous scores of classical music - Ludwig van Beethoven's Fifth ("Destiny") Symphony.
