Let us remind you that "Šiauliai Jazz XXIII" is the twenty-third international jazz music festival and it will delight every fan interested in jazz music (days 2 and 3 of the festival).
November 14 20:30 Šiauliai KC MAX Hall
The festival always encourages the young generation, and now is no exception. The festival will begin with 3 pieces of music presented by young musicians from Šiauliai Saulius Sondeckis Arts Gymnasium, led by teacher and musician Aurim Povilaitis - Jonas Zaleskis, Domas Tuniks, Erikas Jankaitis and teacher Aurimas Povilaitis
Immediately after them, we will see and enjoy the jazz of the Baltic countries.
"Third Stream Quartet" (TSQ) (Latvia/Lithuania) - a jazz quartet formed 2 years ago, in which Erikas Miežis plays - vibrophone, Andris Grunte - double bass, Pranas Kentra (Lithuania) - guitar and Indrikis Veitners - clarinet.
The music of the ensemble is focused on the Cool Jazz/Third Stream stylistics, therefore, in order to achieve a brighter chamber ensemble sound, we will have slightly different sounding percussion.
"Third stream" is the term for fusion of jazz and classical music. A typical example of the sound of the "Third Stream" is the ensemble "Modern Jazz Quartet", as well as the classic recordings of M. Davis and G. Evans "Miles Ahead", "Porgy and Bess" and "Sketches of Spain".
The program will feature compositions and jazz arrangements by I. Veitners and E. Miežis.
in 2024 In March, TSQ recorded their first LP for the Latvian record company Jersika Records. The LP is likely to be released in 2024
About musicians:
Pranas Kentra is the head of the Vilnius College Jazz Department, 2023. participated in "Lūznava Jazz Camp" and "Škiuņa" jazz festival, was a jury member of several Latvian jazz competitions (among them the JVLMA big band composition jury). He is a member of "Broken Glass Quartet" and "Reinless" together with the famous Lithuanian trombonist Jevarus Jasinskas.
New-generation vibrophonist, composer Erikas Miežis, who graduated from the Basel Music Academy in Switzerland, actively creates and performs with Mikelius Dzenuška (whom you already had the opportunity to hear), the LR big band and many other jazz groups.
Andris Grunte is one of the most experienced and professional Latvian jazz double bass players, who regularly performs with the most famous Latvian jazz musicians and groups, such as "Mirage Jazz Orchestra", R. Pauls, M. Briezkalns, M. Kalniņš and many others.
Indrikis Veitners - jazz saxophonist, clarinetist and teacher. Latvian jazz researcher, founder and head of JVLMA jazz department. The first member of the Latvian Radio Big Band before its disbandment in 1995. A member of the jazz orchestra "Mirage Jazz Orchestra" and the Dixieland "Dream Team 1935", he actively performs with the most famous Latvian jazz groups and musicians.
The second team I was really looking forward to:
Eglė Petrošiūtė & Marius Giedra "Homeland Quartet" (Lithuania/Holland)
Eglė Petrošiūtė is one of the luminaries of Lithuanian jazz vocals in the international sky (she has been heard on the Šiauliai jazz scene for a very long time). The artist, represented by the Dutch publishing company Zennez Records, recently released the solo album "Bird's Notes" with the most famous Brazilian drummer in the world, Kiko Freitas. Born in a family of music lovers, E.Petrošiūtė sang from an early age with her parents listening to Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and many other recordings. Today, the master of the Amsterdam Conservatory is active in a wide range of projects: from traditional, contemporary, Brazilian jazz, fusion groups to instrumentally virtuosic orchestral arrangements (Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra, Amstel Big Band, Jazz Orchestra of Concertgebouw, Vilnius Jazz Orchestra).
This is a flexible singer who is known in the Dutch and international jazz and Brazilian music scene as a creative, slightly crazy improviser, gifted with a warm distinctive timbre and a curiosity to study the voice as an instrument. Constantly traveling around Europe and Brazil, E.Petrošiūtė never forgets Lithuania, she often returns to it and brings the most wonderful music she has met. Sometimes - those who are far away from the music are themselves Lithuanians.
This time, E. Petrošiūtė presents a project with a special talent of the youngest generation of jazz musicians: pianist, composer and arranger Marius Giedra (who arranged some of Gin'Gas' works), a master's student at the Amsterdam Conservatory, whom he met in the Netherlands. "Homeland Quartet", which will play at the festival, is about the fact that playing at home is both the most comfortable, the most sensitive, and the biggest responsibility, when you always want to bring only the purest, most special and most beautiful things. This is also about the fact that a new jazz generation has grown up in the last fifteen years, which has already managed to travel a large part of the world, got to know different cultures up close, lived in them and learned from the greats of international fame. She is ambitious. She has and wants to tell a lot, and listening to her is interesting and worthwhile.
Longing for their homeland, young musicians will share the most beautiful works of the jazz treasury and their own compositions, and they will be assisted by wolves well known in Lithuania: double bassist Vytis Nivinskas - the first doctoral student in jazz in Lithuania, and drummer Tuomas J. Räsänen - an alumnus of the world's most famous Berklee College of Music.
About Eglė Petrošiūtė
"Wonderful singing! I admire the dynamism, rhythm and harmony of "Bird's Notes" - Rosa Passos (legendary Brazilian singer, icon).
"This album allows you to enjoy Petrošiūtė's talent. Her song "Bird's Notes" is about becoming free to create and then discover new spaces of knowledge. Like a bird soaring freely and openly into the sky, Spruce soars upward and awakens the spirit. Her album is characterized by elegance, sophistication and unexpected twists" - Sammy Stein (jazz journalist, writer, reviewer, book author)
