On Monday, July 15, at 8 p.m., a concert by ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH playing traditional Javanese and Indonesian gamelan music will be held at Kirtimim Cultural Center.

ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH is a gamelan and percussion ensemble led by Will Guthrie, an Australian drummer and percussionist living in France. The music of the ensemble is inspired by the traditional music of Indonesia and Southeast Asia, but the members of the collective strive to distance themselves from dry academic discourse or exoticization.
〰️ The band creates ever-evolving and relevant music with percussion instruments and resonant metals - using gongs, singing bowls and bells as melodic and harmonic material and polyrhythmic/polymetrical rhythmic possibilities.
〰️ The music of the ensemble is based on its leader Guthrie's experience of traveling around Indonesia and familiarity with various forms of gamelan music, from the majestic suspended temporality of the Javanese gamelan Sekatan to the dizzying, thunderous repetition of the Javanese trance ritual Jathilan, and contemporary Balinese with the shiver of composer Dewa Alit and his gamelan Salukat.
〰️ Guthrie expands the palette of the genre to explore gamelan instruments and pay tribute to his love of this complex but lively percussive music: he takes into account the percussive works of Roscoe Mitchell, the multidirectional improvisation of Henry Threadgill, as well as the works of Trevor Watts, Michael Ranta and Mike Cooper's Cross-Cultural Adventures.
〰️ ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH consists of 8 musicians who come from an eclectic and mixed background. The band members not only perform, but also organize workshops and teach gamelan - they have taught at universities, prisons, squats, schools and community centers.
