Noam Lemish is a pianist, composer and educator whose music boldly combines jazz, contemporary academic creativity and various world traditions. While living in Toronto, he works at York University's Faculty of Music as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Jazz Program. Lemish is widely recognized for his inventive approach to composition and improvisation.
His latest album Twelve earned 2024. JUNO nomination in the best jazz album (solo) category. This project presents six large-scale works for chamber jazz orchestra, which reveal Lemish's ability to combine broad-form structures, lyrical melodies and evocative improvisation into a cohesive and expressive musical world.
Lemish directs several ensembles and is a co-author of various intercultural projects. His work often explores the boundary between composed and improvised music, expanding the language of jazz in new directions.
In a career spanning more than two decades, Lemish has played with such influential artists as Sheila Jordan, Julian Lage, Billy Hart, Dayna Stephens and countless others. His creative path has taken him all over the world - including a significant period in Bhutan where he taught, created and was invited to create a piece for the King's 30th birthday. All this reflects the musician's curiosity and constant desire to discover new sound spaces.
Thoughtful, imaginative and ever-evolving, Noam Lemish occupies a unique place in today's creative music scene. For this European I have Noam assembled a quartet of Canadian jazz stars.
