Monday, September 7, 7:00 p.m. At the Kirtimu Cultural Center, a concert where traditional KATOKYE Western Ugandan throat singing meets Berbere Superstar, psychedelic electronica inspired by Ethiopian music.

John Katokye is one of the most prominent performers of the traditional throat singing of the Banyankore community from Western Uganda. The ekyeshongoro songs he performs are born here and now - improvised poetic phrases about the people, the land, the life and memory of cattle farmers. Overlapping sounds, long vocal flows and an almost ritualistic manner of performance.
in 2025 the album "Obuhangwa bwa Banyankore na Bahororo" released on the famous label "Nyege Nyege Tapes" introduced this unique vocal tradition to an international audience, soon followed by a debut at one of the most important European experimental music festivals - "Le Guess Who?".

The other pole of the evening is Berbere Superstar, a project of American composer and multi-instrumentalist Jonah Rapin. Here, Ethiopian musical heritage, live sampling, electric violin, rhythm machines and rare vinyl merge into an unpredictable fabric open to dance and listening in equal measure. Here we can expect both Jamaican dancehall and Algerian folklore, as well as improvisational music and modern electronics - without clear genre boundaries, but with a strong rhythm and a unique vision.

Both artists create music inspired by tradition, but neither seeks to preserve it. Instead, they allow them to breathe, transform and resonate in a new context.
