On August 26, in Lukiškiau prison 2.0 in Vilnius, one of the pioneers of synthpop and the most prominent representatives of this style - the British band "Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark" (OMD) - will host a concert. Such well-known hits as "Electricity", "Messages", "Enola Gay", "Locomotion", "Souvenir", "Sailing On The Seven Seas", "So in Love" and more. not only made OMD one of the most significant bands of the 1990s, but also inspired many popular music stars to this day, from Depeche Mode, Duran Duran to Moby, Radiohead, Arcade Fire and more. Ticket sales for the OMD concert will begin on December 19. 10 o'clock throughout the Bilietai.lt network. In advance - from December 17. 10 o'clock - tickets can be purchased by subscribers of the "L Tips Agency" newsletter (register here: https://ltips.lv/lt). 1978 is considered the birthday of OMD. on October 12, when lead singer and bassist Andy McCluskey and keyboardist and vocalist Paul Humphreys made their first appearance at Liverpool's Eric's Club. The young people, who previously played music in other projects, were united by their passion for krautrock, Kraftwerk, Brian Eno and David Bowie. A simple Korg M-500 Micro Preset synthesizer, bought on installments by McCluskey's mother, played an important role in the formation of OMD's musical style - it determined a laconic rhythm, complemented by melancholy vocals and memorable melodies with interludes. OMD's first single, Electricity, which McCluskey described as "a faster, more punk-rock version of Kraftwerk's Radioactivity with a twist", helped the duo sign their first record deal and release their debut album, which included another hit, Messages. OMD gained wider recognition in Europe and attention in the US with "Enola Gay", a controversial composition from their second album "Organisation", in which the pulsation of the dance floor and passionate melody contrast with the sensitive lyrics about the US plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. After Organisation, OMD became a four-piece band, with drummer Malcolm Holmes and saxophonist/keyboardist Martin Cooper joining the duo. This is considered the "golden" composition of the group. OMD's third album, Architecture & Morality, featuring such classics as "Maid of Orleans," "Joan of Arc" and "Souvenir," highlighted the band's creative and professional growth. This was followed by the experimental but commercially unsuccessful album Dazzle Ships, after which the band decided to turn towards pop and a simpler style - and it paid off. Along with Junk Culture (1984) and Crush (1985), listeners were treated to hits such as Locomotion, Tesla Girls, Talking Loud and Clear, So In Love, Secret and the US hit If You Leave featured in the movie Pretty In Pink. In 1989, after the other band members decided to form their own band, The Listening Pool, Andy McCluskey remained the sole member of OMD. McCluskey's first solo OMD album 'Sugar Tax' (1991) featured hits such as 'Sailing On The Seven Seas' and 'Pandora's Box' which was quite successful, and listeners also appreciated 'Walking on the Milky Way' from Universal (1996). 1996-2006 The OMD project was suspended and its founders engaged in other activities: A. McCluskey collaborated with ex-Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos to create the girl pop group Atomic Kitten, and P. Humphreys formed the Onetwo project with the former vocalist of the German synthpop group Propaganda Claudia Brücken. in 2006 OMD recovered in the "golden" composition: Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys, Martin Cooper and Malcolm Holmes (he was replaced by Stuart Kershaw in the group in 2015 due to health problems). Since then, they have released 4 studio albums, the most recent of which, Bauhaus Staircase, came out in 2023. It made it clear that OMD remain one of the few bands of their generation still capable of creating music that inspires critical and fan acclaim. Over nearly five decades (on and off), the band have sold more than 40 million records worldwide, cementing their name as electronic synthesizer pioneers and one of Britain's best-loved pop groups.
