The long-standing meaningful tradition of solemnly celebrating the national holiday - February 16 - continues at the National Philharmonic, where the greatest forces of Lithuanian creators and performers gather. The collectives that have been cooperating for more than a decade - the National Symphony Orchestra and the Kaunas State Choir - invite you to listen to new works by Lithuanian authors, remember Lithuanian classics and the most beautiful works of our creators in festive concerts with soloists.
February 16 of this year is accompanied by a new opus by composer Dominyks Digimos commissioned by the Philharmonic. This young creator is known for his widely acclaimed and award-winning work, the payphone opera Things I Dared Not Say, and Now It's Too Late, shown at LNOBT; in 2024 took place in Th. The premiere of his work "Heights" commissioned by the Mann Festival; the composer actively participates in various genre and interdisciplinary projects, is one of the founders of the contemporary music ensemble Synaesthesis. In the new work "Dawn Choir", the author combines several ideas: the "choirs" of birds waking up at dawn, a reminder of the newspaper "Aušra" ("Auszra"), which raised national self-awareness, and a word with negative connotations at the present time, which should not divide, but gather everyone into a common chorus.
The sound canvas of the celebrations will also be colored by the voices of singers Gunta Gelgotė and Nerijaus Masevičius and the mysteriously speaking birbyne of Egidijus Ališauskas, who spoke in fragments of one of Onutė Narbutaitė's most wonderful works "Centones meae urbi" ("An quilt for my city"), dedicated to her native Vilnius. For this work, the composer was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Art. As the author has said, this oratorio is "an attempt to use sounds to create a city that no longer exists in reality. But at the same time, with the rather intimate nature of the music, I wanted to say that that past is a tangible and experienced part of our experience, the source of our life. And in this sense, the oratorio, being very documentary, at the same time touches on the completely universal theme of human life and death."
