Lithuania and Japan meet through Čiurlionis: bridges of music and art between Vilnius and Tokyo
In recent years, cultural ties between Lithuania and Japan have been growing stronger - not only through art, but also through music. 2023 became a special year: the Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa created a new piece for the 700th anniversary of Vilnius, and the music of Lithuanian authors was played at a concert organized by the Japan Federation of Composers (JFC). in 2024 In Tokyo, at a recital by pianist Yusuke Ishii, music by Lithuanian composers was presented alongside Japanese works.
Lithuanian music has reached the stages of Japan more than once - compositions by M. K. Čiurlionis are among the exported works. And in 2026 Čiurlionis' work as an artist is also planned to be presented in Tokyo. To commemorate this occasion, the JFC organized a competition for Japanese composers, inviting them to create piano works on the themes of Čiurlionis.
The selected works reveal how widely the spirit of Čiurlionis inspires contemporary artists - some creators draw inspiration from his paintings, others from his music. As one of the contestants, composer Masao Endo, says:
"When writing this work, the vision of light became the most important thing for me - the work is not a direct translation of Čiurlionis' paintings into sounds."
It is this dialogue between creativity and cultures that will become the axis of the future concert - it is a space where Lithuania and Japan meet, and Čiurlionis becomes a connecting leitmotif between two modern, multicultural cities - Vilnius and Tokyo.
Complementing this musical narrative, the authors of the concert program also included works by foreign composers related to Vilnius or Tokyo - thus revealing the cultural multi-layeredness and creative pulse of both cities.
Museum of Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema in 2026. will celebrate its centenary. This concert is one of the anniversary events, where pianist Yusuke Ishii will perform for the first time the works of Japanese composers imbued with the vision of M. K. Čiurlionis.
