in 2026 June 12 7 p.m. LVSO concert hall LVSO | J. BRAHMS. "GERMAN REQUIEM" 17th LVSO Summer FestivalJ. Brahms. "German Requiem" for soloists, choir and orchestra, Op. 45 Kamilė Bonté, soprano Raimundas Juzuitis, baritone Kaunas State Choir (conductor Robertas Šerveniks) Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra Conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, led by the artistic director and chief. conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius, invites you to hear one of the most monumental works of Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) - "German Requiem" at the 17th LVSO summer festival. The "German Requiem" saw the light of the stage after a turbulent decade in the composer's life. in 1856 Mr. Brahms was shocked by the death of his close friend, teacher and colleague Robert Schumann (1810-1856), and in 1865, after a divorce from Mr. Brahms' father, the composer's beloved mother, Christiane, also died unexpectedly. In the same year, the composer began writing his German Requiem, which he completed in 1868. The magnificent work fulfilled R. Schumann's prophecy about the genius of J. Brahms - after the extremely successful premieres of the work, the composer received international recognition and became one of the most prominent figures in the musical life of Vienna. Although the Requiem is traditionally called the Roman Catholic mass for the dead, Mr. Brahms, who was raised Protestant, chose a different path. After rejecting the classical Latin texts of the mass, the composer used verses from the Bible translated into German by the reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546) for his work - thus the Requiem became "German". In his letters to the music director of Bremen Cathedral, Martin Reinthaler, Brahms wrote that he would be happy to avoid even the word "German" and call this piece the "Human Requiem". Unlike the Roman Catholic liturgy, where the Requiem begins with a prayer for the dead ("Give eternal rest to the dead, Lord!"), J. Brahms' work focuses on the remaining living: "Blessed are those who mourn, they will be comforted" (from "Blessings", Mt 5:4). While God remains a source of hope and comfort, a bright, humanistic compassion pervades the entire work. "German Requiem" by J. Brahms consists of seven parts: I. Blessed are those who mourn, II. All mankind is like grass, III. Lord, show me my end, IV. How lovely are Thy dwelling places, V. Now dost thou mourn, VI. After all, we don't have a city that stays here, VII. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. In the course of these parts, the listener embarks on a journey from mourning to the ultimate promise of eternal peace. However, it is not the destination that fills you, but the journey itself. When buying 10 or more tickets, you can contact: vipklientai@bilietai.lt Doors open: 18:00
