Media opera "Čiurlionis Spaces: Serpent's Path"
The authors of the media opera are Audronė Žigaitytė and Mantas Bartusevičius. The performance is based on the work of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, using modern video, light and surround sound tools. It is a tale without words, in which the symbolism of the serpent - life, transformation and the path - is revealed through mythological signs, movement and music.
More than 200 paintings by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis are used in the visual dramaturgy of the performance, which become an active part of the artistic narrative.
The musical fabric consists of opus from different periods and genres of Čiurlionis's work: harmonized Lithuanian folk song "Sutems tamsi naktužėlė" (performed by the Vilnius sacred music choir ADORAMUS, conductor Imantas Jonas Šimkus); Fragment of the first part of the quartet (arranged by Vilhelmas Čepinskis, performed by Šiauliai Chamber Orchestra SOLARIS, conducted by V. Čepinskis); fragments of the symphonic poems "Forest" and "Sea" and the cantata "De Profundis". Performed by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (artistic director and chief conductor Juozas Domarkas) and the Kaunas State Choir (artistic director Petras Bingelis), conducted by Juozas Domarkas.
"Čiurlionis Spaces: Žaltis kelias" combines music, image and light into an integrated dramaturgical experience, in which classical cultural heritage is actualized in the language of modern media theater. The performance was born as an attempt not to illustrate, but to decipher the worldview of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis - the cosmic logic hidden at the junction of his music, painting and thinking. While creating the opera, we were looking for an internal connection between the fragments of Čiurlionis' paintings and musical structures. Snakes became that connection - not as a folkloric character, but as a mythological axis of the Baltic worldview, opening the cosmology of Čiurlionis' work.
