In the old town of Vilnius, where every stone curve reminds of centuries of cultural community, St. St. Catherine's Church will once again become the lively center of the music sanctuary during this year's "Christmas Evenings" festival. An exclusive concert will be held here, where two musical traditions of Sakartveli will meet: classical and folk. It is not only an artistic evening, but also a meaningful cultural dialogue that connects peoples, generations and different worlds of music.
The sound of classical music will be presented by the Giya Kancheli String Quartet, which promotes the traditions of Sakartveli music internationally.
The ensemble was founded in 2010 by students of the Tbilisi State Conservatory under the leadership of Professor Nodar Zhvanija. Since its creation, the collective has been actively participating in international competitions and festivals, winning the highest awards, collaborating with famous musicians, including T. Licheli, V. Šiukashvili, G. Babuadze and others.
In 2018, by the decision of the composer Giya Kancheli, the collective was given his name.
The quartet is led by violinist David Akopian - a graduate of the Tbilisi State Conservatory, who actively participates in international projects and collaborating with Lithuanian composers.
The following will appear together with him on stage:
Violinist Nika Barateli - graduate of the Tbilisi State Conservatory (class of Prof. K. Vardeli), laureate of international and national chamber music competitions, artist of the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra, member of the Sakartveli State Quartet.
Alto player Mamuka Babuadze - Tbilisi graduate of the state conservatory, artist of the Sakartveli National Symphony Orchestra, member of the Tbilisi State Chamber Orchestra "Georgian Sinfonietta", actively performing in Sakartveli and other European countries.
Aleksej Solonovič-Gvamičava - cellist from Kartveli, actively performing in Sakartveli as a soloist and chamber music performer. He is a soloist of the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra led by Vakhtang Kahidze, a laureate of international competitions, a regular participant of Sakartveli and foreign festivals, appearing both solo and in chamber ensembles.
Traditional Kartveli music will be presented by the joint Lithuanian and Sakartveli ensemble "Rero", where famous instrumental and vocal ethnic music performers meet. The hymns and folk songs they perform will open the door to the archaic, polyphonic musical soul of Sakartvel, full of emotional depth, national identity and contemporary expression.
