We invite you to visit the artistic priestly house of the writer Juozos Tumos - Vaižgant's apartment
Juoz Tumos-Vaižgant's apartment-museum (a branch of the Maironis Museum of Lithuanian Literature) was established in 1997. authentically according to archival photos, because the writer had photographed all his rooms. The four memorial rooms combine practical simplicity with aesthetics. Vaižgantas himself had called the environment of his apartment artistically priestly. He had, in his words, “a gallery of inexpensive but select pictures.” These pictures, as they did then, hang in all the rooms. There are several sculptures. Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas lived and worked in this apartment for thirteen years. Through the windows of the apartment you can see St. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin (Vytautas the Great), which is the oldest early Gothic monument in Kaunas. Vaižgantas was the rector of this church for almost twelve years, taking care of its restoration and repair. Since there was no sacristy in the church, all matters were handled in the order room. Vaižgantas was famous as a popular priest, loved by the people, so there was never a shortage of visitors here - the door opened for those who dared to ask for money, because they knew that the kind-hearted priest would lend them. In the room there is a massive oak work table in baroque style, its author is the famous interwar Kaunas furniture maker Jonas Prapuolenis. A canon's cassock hangs in the corner, fur coats in the closet, Vaižgant is even mentioned in his will as the most expensive part of the "wardrobe".
In the guest room, a set of living room furniture, a bookcase, where books from the Vaižgant library are stored. Here you will meet the resident of the museum - the yellow canary Mykoliuk (based on Vaižgant's novel "Uncles and Aunts") - the writer also had the same bird. excursions and educational programs are organized for visitors of all ages. Excursions and educational programs must be ordered in advance.
