L'oeil d'Olivier Julian Vogel creates his own circus with the performance "Ceramic circus". Pure, simple, clear and at the same time bold and bright. It challenges the audience's intuition. We secretly await the sound of shattering pottery, but at the same time we hope to preserve the fragile. Paradoxical desire, expressed in the endless thud of drums, a bicycle moving in a circle, breaking all the rules, and plates dancing on the thinnest bars. And, of course, in a body "on rollers", constantly searching for balance... In this tension in the air, only the ceramic ball rotating in the center provides peace. If we surrender to the silence behind the noise, new perspectives open up with each movement. Suddenly we hear what we were creating just a moment ago. We forget all expectations. "Ceramic circus" is an invitation to question the obvious and turn the everyday into something magical. Swiss artist Julian Vogel's latest work is a modern reference to the traditional circus, embracing his ability to make the impossible possible, to create and break expectations, and to celebrate illusion and magic in newly created worlds. A short-term poetic gesture that remains in the memory for a long time. After graduating in psychology and art history from the University of Bern (2014), Julian Vogel specialized in diabolo at the Academy of Circus and Performance Arts in Tilburg, graduating in 2019. His solo work "Transition No. 1" was nominated for the BNG Bank Award. Since then, he has created the China Series, a collection of performances, installations and videos about the diabolo he makes himself out of ceramics. For this interdisciplinary project that combines circus, performance and fine art, he became the winner of Circus Next 2020/2021. Mr. Vogel, who lives in Basel, participates in various European artistic projects as an author, performer, producer or sound designer. He is one of the founders of Trottvoir (2012) and Klub Girko (2017), with whom he has created several works. As an associate artist from 2021 he cooperates with Compagnie sh. and Panama Pictures. And in 2023 founded his troupe "Cie. unlisted". https://www.cieunlisted.ch/2024 Les SUBS in Lyon commissioned him to create a summer scenography: Crescendo, a monumental work of art 9 meters high and 70 meters long, made up of a hundred ceramic tubes. In the same year, he created Ceramic Circus. To present this work, he works closely with the porcelain manufacturer Revol, which is committed to the production and recycling of the plates used in the performance. 2025-2026 for the season J. Vogel is selected for the Artist-LAB program at the Kaserne gallery in Basel.
