Year after year, the raging North Sea came closer, and in 2007 it was decided to dismantle the church, stone by stone, with the hope of reconstructing it in the future. However, this dream was later abandoned. in 2015 Mårup Church was reduced to ruins and forgotten. Award-winning dancer and choreographer Palle Granhøj was born in a small town very close to where the church once stood. The performance "This is not Mårup Church" is a journey into Palle Granhøj's personal space, a poetic reflection on the longing for what is gone, presented as a combination of words, live music, choral singing and movement. LONGING LIVES THE BODY What is longing? The first love, the discoveries of childhood, the desire for life and the vitality of youth - feelings that have left their mark, but are no longer there. The choreographer himself, four dancers, two musicians and a polyphonic male choir appear on stage, all together exploring the nature of longing through the iconic technique of obstruction. Some may know Mårup Church from the movie Babette's Feast. Others perhaps precisely because she is gone. This performance is about what we long for and a reminder that what is lost can still reach us - through body, music and silence. "What is longing? It must be something approaching, perhaps something religious. In any case, it is an irrational, ritualistic devotion to some higher power." - Palle Granhøj, choreographer Granhøj Dans is an internationally acclaimed Danish dance troupe. Its artistic director and choreographer Palle Granhøj creates in close collaboration with the dancers. The basis of each of his performances is the author's technique of obstruction, which has given birth to almost 40 original works over the past 35 years. Based on the work method mentioned above, the choreographer transforms the movements of the performers, limiting their actions, revealing the inner layers of their personality and thus highlighting the human being. Instead of exhibiting the plasticity of the dancers and the characteristics of the choreography, Mr. Granhøj aims to reveal men and women on stage as they are: real, alive and complex.
