Although Keren Klimovsky wrote the play You Block My Ocean back in 2011, this will be her first production on the theater stage. and such a sharp, grotesque form. After reading it now, 15 years later, I realized that the play is not about love at all, but on the contrary - about the impossibility of love. About the fear of love, about trifles, rational rejection of it, about selfish love that cannot stand the test of time, and death due to lack of love.
All the characters in the play long for love, but are unable to love. Probably because they are obsessed with fantasies of love that do not take into account another, living person with their own problems, fears, shortcomings.
Now I see that this is a text about our generation, which has been given complete freedom. But it didn't make us happier, and we still don't understand how to use this freedom. It's like we rub each other with our pain and hurt each other even more (regardless of whether we've started families
or live single lives).
There's something about the older generation in the play as well. I have always worried about the theme of love between older people, their relationships. Maybe because things get even more intense towards the end as death approaches and starts to claim its rights over you. Or maybe because this experience is far from me: it's like I'm trying to prioritize it on myself, and because of this distance something is born.
However, the older generation in this play is measured through the eyes of our generation. After all, we really wanted to prove that we were better than our parents, that we would succeed in what they failed. But did it work? Unlike them - yes, but maybe it's not "better" but simply "differently "bad"? It turns out that we, people, have not yet figured out how to live with it, with this love. It was a sad play. But hopefully not hopeless. Therefore, it was important for me to emphasize the comedy of the situations - to make people laugh. Because as long as we can laugh at ourselves, we have hope..." (K. Klimovsky). the plays "Lullaby for a grown man" (2017) and "Widow, not growing up, seal and others" (2019).
