The end of November, fifteen degrees Celsius, and no snow. A circus, whose only exhibit is a dead whale, arrives in a small town of Hungary. There are rumors that this circus is followed by a hundred crowd, devastating every settlement in which the troupe appears, so the city is overwhelmed by tension and the wait for the catastrophe. Scared residents cling to the last manifestations of order to them: in household, music, in space.
László Krasznahork (born 1954) is a renowned Hungarian writer known for its dense, poetic style and apocalyptic themes. In his work, the author often examines a person's resistance and collapse of the universal order, skillfully combining existential anxiety with black humor.
In the novel "Melancholy of Resistance" we follow the fates of several characters: Valuška, the Idiot, which is only concerned with the movement of space bodies, the pure soul freak, unable to protect himself from the impending threat; Esther, a professor of music that is closed from the world and does not travel from the bed, a misanthropist, only interested in old instrument tuning systems; His wife, Estherne, who is under the guise of "moral overlapping" and "cleansing" seeking to break into power; And the pflaumn, turning her apartment into a jungle of indoor plants, which is locked in for a while for the Apocalypse to pass her without touching her.
According to director Adam Juska, he is interested in how people respond to the collapse of the established order. How to live next to the threat that exceeds the strength? Can a person create his or her inner, personal order and does it make sense surrounded by global chaos?
