"The Dresser" invites you to travel to England in the 1940s and take a look at the tragicomic evening of the actor Sir and his dresser Norman preparing for the performance. The era of the Second World War marks the end of the era of groups performing Shakespeare's works - young men leaving for the war field abandon the troupes, and the lack of actors becomes a challenge for the chief actor and theater manager. Sir is one of them. As bombs fly over the theater and the fallen actor struggles to keep up with his surroundings, Norman, Sir's longtime assistant, is determined to keep the theater alive, but is he destined to succeed?
The show invites you to take a peek into the romantic backstage of the theater and listen to the conversations and banter of the characters full of wit, humor and deep love for the theater. This wildly funny and deeply moving work is still considered to be one of the greatest portraits of life in the theater.
Sir Ronald Harwood's play "Aprengėjas" by British playwright, screenwriter and actor with Lithuanian roots has been reigning in theaters all over the world for forty years. Both the play itself and its productions have won many prizes, including the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award. In 1983, he received particularly wide recognition and numerous awards. The film "The Dresser" directed by Peter Yates, and in 2015 Anthony Hopkins and Ian McKellen played the roles of Sir and Norman in Richard Eyre's film.
The Lithuanian theater audience was first introduced to this play by director Algirdas Latėnas. He in 1996 He staged "Aprengėja" in the Lithuanian National Drama Theater with such stars as Regimantas Adomaitis, Eglė Gabrėnaitė, Arūnas Sakalauskas and others. Director A. Latenas, who is returning to the play that reveals the behind-the-scenes of the actors' lives for the second time, says that it is important for him to establish a relationship with the people who came to the theater. This will not be difficult, as the play offers excellent material for the actors. And these are probably the entire constellation of the Juozas Miltinis Drama Theater.
