Aleksandr Špilevoj THE ISLAND THAT IS NOT a two-part play
For the first time in the history of the Panevėžys scene, the Juozos Miltinis Drama Theater and the Panevėžys Musical Theater united for a common goal - to tell the story of the legendary theater personality Juozos Miltinis and the beginning of the theater he created.
Today, the names of Juoz Miltinis, Donatas Banionis, Vaclovas Blėdis, Eugenija Šulgaitė, Regina Zdanavičiūtė and other legends of the Panevėžys theater are included in the gold fund of Lithuanian culture. However, few people know how it all started, how the founders of the Panevėžys Theater lived in the first years of their creation, how they became actors, how they survived the Second World War and how the theater they cherished, which they considered their artistic sanctuary and an island where they found refuge from external political pressure, cultural decay, and financial deprivation, was formed.
This story of the beginning of the Panevėžys theater is surrounded by many myths and legends. It is said that the young actors and their teacher Juozas Miltinis who came to Panevėžys were accommodated in the monastery on Marijonų Street, where they actually began to live as real artistic monks - they devoted themselves completely to art and continuous learning, without having the right to create families, communicate with the outside world, and have fun. Everything was shared - place of residence, food, money, all troubles and joys. Not everyone made it, but those who did became legends.
The creators of the show decided to look at those difficult times of theater creation and invite the audience to explore the myth of young, passionate idealists who are ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of great art, which they considered to be the island of the world's essence. The island that doesn't exist. The island that they selflessly created in order not to fall, not to drown them in the oppressive and suffocating domestic reality.
The performance features live music by the Panevėžys Musical Theater Orchestra.
in 2022 Albinas Kēleris was nominated for the Golden Cross of the Stage in the actor category for his role as the Maestro in the play "The Island That Is Not".
in 2022 composer Mantvydas Leonas Pranulis became the laureate of the Golden Cross of the Stage for the music for the play "The Island That Is Not".
