We will soon be able to sail out of the earth-crushing land into the "boundless ocean of the sky."
The end of November, fifteen degrees of cold, and still no snow. A circus comes to a small Hungarian town, whose only exhibit is a dead whale. Rumors spread that this circus is followed by a mob of hundreds, ravaging every settlement where the troupe appears, so the city is gripped by tension and anticipation of catastrophe. Frightened residents cling to the last manifestations of order left to them: in the household, in music, in space.
László Krasznahorkai (born 1954) is a famous Hungarian writer known for his dense, poetic style and apocalyptic themes. In his work, the author often examines human resilience and the collapse of the global order, masterfully combining existential anxiety with black humor.
In the novel "The Melancholy of Opposition" we follow the fates of several characters: Valushka, the "idiot" of the town, who only cares about the movement of cosmic bodies, a freak with a pure soul who is unable to protect himself from the approaching threat; Esther, a music professor who is closed off from the world and does not get out of bed, a misanthrope who is only interested in old instrument tuning systems; his wife, Esterne, seeking to break into power under the guise of "moral rearmament" and "polishing"; and Pflaumne, who has turned her apartment into a jungle of indoor plants, who is locked away waiting for the apocalypse to pass without affecting her.
According to director Adam Juška, he is interested in how people react to the collapse of the established order. How to live next to an overwhelming threat? Can a person create his own internal, personal order and does it make sense in the midst of global chaos?
