Panevėžys Musical Theater presents the legendary musical "Nine Beds" by Giedrias Kuprevičius and Kazios Sajas. The performance is dedicated to the 80th birthday of composer Giedrias Kuprevičius, laureate of the National Culture and Art Prize, and to the 50th anniversary of the first musical production (1974) at the Panevėžys Drama Theater.
That production was directed by Vaclov Blėdis, the most famous actors of the Panevėžys Drama Theater trained by Juoz Miltinis acted in it, the scenography was created by Vitalijs Mazūrs, and the choreography was by Česlovas Žebrauskas. The very popular performance lasted until 1986.
Today's "Devynbėdžius" is created by promising director of the young generation Jonas Kuprevičius, the main roles will be played by well-known actors and singers Jovita Vaškevičiūtė, Arminas Skirvainis (LNOBT soloists), Jurgis Jarašius, Kasparas Varanavičius, Alfredas Miniotas, Rytis Janilionis, actors Mindaugas Ancevičius, Ramune Degutytė, actors of the Juozo Miltinii Drama Theater Emilis Pavilionis, Ieva Brikė, Donatas Kalkauskas, Rokas Pijus Misiūnas, Gintautas Žiogas, Panevėžys musical theater choir singers Rima Labudė, Vaiva Šateikaitė, Agnė Jakštonienė, Gražina Krikščiūnienė, Gediminas Liulevičius and others. The music director and conductor of the production is Imantas Jonas Šimkus, the choreographer is Vesta Grabštaitė, the set designer is Arvydas Gudas, the costume designer is Kristina Kruopienytė, the lighting designer is Vilius Vilutis. The music for the orchestra of the Panevėžys Musical Theater was arranged by the composer Lukas Butkus, so well-known melodies are reborn with a new, powerful sound of the orchestra.
"I am happy to be able to contribute to the production of G. Kuprevičius's musical "Nine Beds" at the Panevėžys Musical Theater. K. Saja's text tells us about the alienation of people, putting one's self and material gain above simple humanity. Individual vs. community, self vs. stranger, humanity vs. animality, God vs. idol: each viewer will hear something that is particularly relevant to our day. I believe that the wonderful music of G. Kuprevičius and the text of K. Saja will sound new this time," says conductor Imantas Jonas Šimkus.
"Nine Beds" tells about a mystical Lithuanian village living peacefully and happily, until an unusual "guest" stumbles into it - Klemens the bull. Unexpectedly, conflicts break out, different points of view emerge, which determine the relationship between a person and the community, and the clash of values. According to the director of the play, J. Kuprevičius, "the themes of this work, related to alienation, the conflict between humanity and selfishness, are always relevant in any period of time in which society lives".
The performance not only combines the historical heritage of Lithuanian musical theater with the vision of modern theater, but also invites the audience to immerse themselves in a sincere fairy tale for adults full of allegories and unexpected characters.
