Have you ever felt like you suddenly lost track of what script your life was taking, what genre of history you were in? Are you the main character or just a supporting character in someone else's movie? This is exactly how Edita feels.
"Shok, Edita, shok" is a tragicomic story about a young girl, Edita, who works at a video rental at the beginning of Independence and tries to understand her place in the world by watching movies. In Edita's imagination, life is a movie, but she doesn't know what genre yet. Sometimes she is a fighter, sometimes a romantic heroine, sometimes a lonely teenager, lost between Hollywood dreams and the reality of Šiauliai.
At the center of the play is Edita's obsessive love for a guy who has no idea about her feelings. Like the novel Pietinia kronikas, Rimantas Kmita's new play balances between comedy and a sensitive, sincere exploration of the subject. With gentle humor, it reveals how a young woman's identity is formed when there are no clear models - when American films mix with post-Soviet reality, and free market ideas - with old, not yet healed traumas.
Eglė Vertelytė, the famous film director making her debut on the theater stage and the author of the script of the film "Southern Chronicle", did not avoid the elements of cinematic expression, so in the performance screen projection, filmed episodes merge with live action and choreographer Airida Gudaites' interpretations of the film "Purvini shokiai".
The director offers to observe the events of the scene as if it were a "tape" created in Edita's imagination. The viewer finds himself between two worlds - reality and fantasy, everyday traumas and cinematic dreams. Is it possible to survive in reality without diving into fantasy? Is it possible to create an original movie of your life while living among pirated VHS tapes?
The performance is like an extension of the novel Pietinia kronikas on the theater stage, only here the version of Edita's story is told. The role of Edita in the play is created by Vaidilė Juozaitytė, one of the most promising actresses of the young generation from Šiauliai, who played Edita in the highly popular adaptation of the novel. On the theater stage, her partner is VŠDT actor Tautvydas Galkauskas. And, of course, the play is performed in a real Šiauliai dialect.
The premiere is expected in 2025. June 5, 6
