Menopause is a challenging period in a woman's life that begins in middle age. At this stage, various changes occur in the body, affecting not only the physical, but also the psychological well-being of a woman. Hormonal imbalance can affect thinking, expression of emotions and behavior, make a woman more sensitive, and in some cases even more irritable and angry.
The topic of menopause is often considered "taboo" because women rarely share this experience with other women, especially older women. In many countries, including Lithuania, the topic of menopause is not discussed publicly, there is a lack of information about it. This stage is difficult psychologically. Not all women accept it easily, and sometimes it takes longer to adjust to the changes. A woman who has known all her life that she can bring a new life into the world must now accept that these functions are no longer valid. This can lead to a kind of feeling of inadequacy – maybe I'm not as valuable as I used to be? Such thoughts can lead to feelings of emptiness and affect self-esteem and worldliness. A woman has various thoughts and considerations. Menopause can feel like a wake-up call that she's getting older and that something unstoppable is happening in life. Sometimes a woman can be tormented by thoughts about her own worth and identity. Despite this, many women remain attractive, youthful, energetic and active after menopause. Thoughts of menopause and aging can throw them off balance and all of this can lead to depression or other illnesses. But at the end of the day, it's not just about aging—it's about who I am as a woman and being able to live life to the fullest.
"The creative team of the Book Theater aims to speak loudly about the feelings and experiences of women in this period of their lives with the play "Art pause". It's an interactive comedy for women that explores the menopausal crisis through comical situations. "Art pause" not only raises the mood of the audience, but also aims to change the public's attitude towards menopause. We want to show the show to women suffering from oncological diseases, who also experience various experiences that affect their well-being and emotional health. The comedy is also planned to be shown to women's crisis centers, to women united by help lines located in the city of Vilnius.
The show is designed to include elements of humor and artistic performance that promote a positive and accepting approach to this stage of life. The aim is to emphasize the potential of interdisciplinary art forms, connecting theater and social networks, creating active communication with the audience.
During the project, women are also actively involved in social networks, especially Facebook, where a closed women's group "Visos mes Ievos" has been created. In this group, women are encouraged to share information, questions, discuss menopause, and thus expand the community, promote mutual understanding and women's solidarity.
The target audience of the project is middle-aged women (40-60 years old) who have already experienced menopause or are approaching this period, as well as women who are experiencing various life crises, suffering from oncological diseases. The aim of this project is to expand the possibilities of artistic expression by integrating educational and entertainment elements. The show provides a unique opportunity (Facebook group) to spread information among women about the physical and emotional aspects of menopause, providing accurate information and debunking myths. The group emphasizes empowering women to openly discuss menopause, helping them understand body changes and building a supportive community.
The project participants promote the creation of a dialogue between women of different generations, aiming for a deeper mutual understanding and empathy. This creates a community where ongoing discussions and mutual support are encouraged to ensure that the impact of the project becomes an ongoing practice and not just a one-off experience. Artistic value of the project: The performance uses comic situations and humor to attract the attention of the audience. The comedic elements not only add lightness to the atmosphere during the performance, but also help remove the sense of shame that often accompanies considering menopause. Interactivity allows the audience to actively participate and interact with the actors, strengthening the sense of community and creating a closer connection between the stage and the audience.
Cultural value of the project: "Theatre of the Book" emphasizes the cultural value by creating a platform where menopause is no longer considered a "taboo", and discussions about this topic become not only acceptable, but also important parts of the cultural space. The show promotes cultural dialogue, as it features women of various ages and social groups. This contributes to the recognition of different perspectives and experiences. The Facebook group "Visos mes Ievos" contributes to the formation of the women's community. Such communication and exchange of information strengthen cultural ties between women.
