Actors of the LNDT troupe read
We invite you to a reading of the drama dedicated to one of the most significant people of the 20th century. of the early works of European dramaturgy - George Bernard Shaw's tragedy "Saint Joan" (1923). It is a monumental play based on historical sources that analyzes the phenomenon of Joan of Arc at the intersection of political, religious and ethical tensions. Shaw's work stands out for its intellectual accuracy, critical historical reflection and modern interpretation of the concept of heroism.
The play recreates the 15th century. France's political and ecclesiastical context, presenting Joan of Arc not only as a religious visionary or a national hero, but also as an exceptionally modern character - a person who overcomes the limitations of the system and rises above traditional authorities and thought patterns. Shaw tells Jeanne's story not from the perspective of romantic myth, but from the perspective of rational analysis, exploring the conflict between individual conscience and institutional apparatus. The play becomes a platform for a discussion about moral choice, political responsibility, the role of religion in society and the tension between progressive thought and tradition.
The dramaturgical structure of the work combines historical dialogue, philosophical argumentation and Shaw's characteristic satirical force. Saint Joan highlights how heroism can be understood as radical autonomy, and tragedy as the failure of institutions to recognize a new, history-changing truth. in 1925 the work earned Shaw the Nobel Prize for Literature, further cementing the play's importance in the development of modern theatre.
George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) is an Irish playwright, essayist and critic, one of the most influential creators of modern dramaturgy and shapers of intellectual theatre. Shaw sought to transform the theater into a space for the discussion of social, political and moral ideas, and his works are known for irony, rational argumentation and the courage to revise established societal norms. Saint Joan is considered his most mature historical work, combining a humanist sensibility and critical intellectual analysis.
