"Death notices of Lithuanians. The history of one performance" presents a group of theater creators who are trying to recreate the legendary performance and thus bring fullness back to their own and the theater's present. But the work is difficult - the actors deal with issues of love and personal fulfillment, the aging director chases his passing fame, and neither in the performance nor behind the scenes can we capture more than a second of moments of success and happiness. Attempts to restore or recreate them do not help. The hope that it is possible to achieve eternal happiness in a temporary world imprisons creators little by little in a theater that turns into hell - an eternally temporary performance.
Film director and screenwriter Karolis Kaupinis in 2024. won the European Playwrights Residency Program competition organized by the Lithuanian National Drama Theater with its partners (the Spanish National Theater in Madrid, the Gorky Theater in Berlin, the Royal Flemish Theater in Brussels and the Zagreb Youth Theatre). The play he wrote at the "Versmė" dramaturgy festival received many favorable reviews, and the author received an invitation to create a play on the LNDT Big Stage.
"The most interesting aspiration in the theater for me is trying to touch eternity, because by its nature this branch of art is the most ephemeral. It is the main human desire to surpass the temporary self. And the temporality of everything is now an essential feeling for me. I sense that it is not only mine. It seems to me that the fear of extinction (namely collective extinction, not only individual death) is what lingers in the subconscious of many of us as the Russian regime constantly repeats its threats that sooner or later we will get what the Ukrainians are experiencing now. So where, if not in a temporary theater, is it worth talking about that sense of temporality", says director Karolis Kaupinis about the relevance of the work.
In the performance, he uses many archival videos of Lithuanian theater legends.
According to the director, the main idea of ​​the work "Lituvian death notices. The history of one performance" is that in the current unstable time, the belief that everything does not end here and now can become a sustainable hope. And the temporality of this world is redeemed by the eternity of the other world. "This is an idea that a secular person has already driven out of their head, and that is why it is so difficult to deal with their temporality. However, in the present, we inevitably have to return to this idea in order not to lose the meaning of life. Therefore, with this performance, we want to allow the audience to experience a sense of togetherness by bringing them together, to create a sense of hope and meaning in a time where politics does not provide this," says Karolis Kaupinis.
