What shocked me the most was how relevant this internationally acclaimed play is in Lithuania, not only from an ecological point of view, but also from a social point of view. According to United Nations research, Lithuania is the second most rapidly disappearing nation in the world. We, like many other phenomena in the world, are on the verge of extinction. We were in the lead for a long time, but in the next couple of decades, extinction The prognosis is that there will be almost thirty percent less people. I want the good life to continue? What is our future scenario? And this performance is my manifesto for life."
It is a work about the value of life, the inevitability of death, the miracle of emergence and theories of extinction. The main character of the play tells about our planet - how it began to form, how different species appeared and disappeared, and how we live today. Is it possible that the climate crisis caused by industry, human activity, various business branches has brought humanity to the verge of the sixth extinction?
Mass extinction is a geological period when a large part of biological diversity or individual species - bacteria, fungi, plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates - disappear. The last fifth mass extinction occurred 65.5 million years ago. years when there were no more dinosaurs left on Earth.
With the world on the brink of an ecological catastrophe, we also need to rethink how theater can operate more sustainably. The Lithuanian National Drama Theater, together with 13 other leading European theaters (Switzerland, Italy, France, Croatia, Hungary, Sweden, Portugal, Belgium, Taiwan, Slovenia, etc.) is implementing the joint project STAGES for the first time in history in order to create a more sustainable theater methodology.
All the theaters participating in the project are creating a performance based on the play by the American author Miranda Rose Hall, which for the first time aims to look at environmentalism in the theater in a fundamental way, instead of declaratively and superficially.
The initiator of the project, the director Katie Mitchell, together with Miranda Rose Hall, adapted the play in such a way that it could be recreated and updated in each country where the play is being recreated.
It is aimed that the performance "A play for those living in the era of extinction" will be created in each country by saving resources, as well as by refusing unnecessary trips and flights. During the performance, only the electricity generated by the actors on the stage can be used, the power used cannot exceed 150 watts.
The creation of the play is financed by the European Union's "Creative Europe" program.
The performance was created together with partners: Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne, R.B. Jérôme Bel, STAGES - Sustainable Theater Alliance for a Green Environmental Shift: Dramaten Stockholm, National Theater & Concert Hall Taipei, NTGent, Piccolo Teatro di Milano - Teatro d'Europa, Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, Théâtre de Liège, Croatian National Theater in Zagreb, Slovene National Theater Maribor, Trafo, MC93, Maison de la culture de Seine-Saint-Denis
This performance is part of the project "Sustainable theatre?" conceived by Katie Mitchell, Jérôme Bel, Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne in collaboration with the Competence Center for Sustainability of the University of Lausanne: two performances and a creative workshop, scripted and recreated in each theater in partnership with the local team.
